Our Changing Climate
Climatologists Forecast Completely New Climates
September 1, 2007 — Geographers have projected temperature increases due to greenhouse gas emissions to reach a not-so-chilling conclusion: climate zones will shift and some climates will disappear completely by 2100. Tropical highlands and polar regions may be the first to disappear, and large swaths of the tropics and subtropics will reach even hotter temperatures. The study anticipates large climate changes worldwide.
The eastern United States has a mild, humid, temperate climate, while the western United States has a dry climate, right?
Well, according to climate models, global warming could change our current world climate zones, which would affect where crops are grown and even drive some plant and animal species to extinction, all in the next 100 years.
Al Gore brought the issue to the big screen. Global warming -- what impact could it really have on our world? Geographer Jack Williams says, based on his new analyzes of climate forecasting models, we're headed for major change -- fast.

Collapse Of Antarctic Ice Sheet Would Likely Put Washington, D.C. Largely Underwater
ScienceDaily (Feb. 6, 2009) — University of Toronto and Oregon State University geophysicists have shown that should the West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse and melt in a warming world – as many scientists are concerned it will – it is the coastlines of North America and of nations in the southern Indian Ocean that will face the greatest threats from rising sea levels.
The catastrophic increase in sea level, already projected to average between 16 and 17 feet around the world, would be almost 21 feet in such places as Washington, D.C., scientists say, putting it largely underwater. Many coastal areas would be devastated. Much of Southern Florida would disappear, according to researchers at Oregon State University.
“There is widespread concern that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet may be prone to collapse, resulting in a rise in global sea levels,” says geophysicist Jerry X. Mitrovica, who, along with physics graduate student Natalya Gomez and Oregon State University geoscientist Peter Clark, are the authors of a new study to be published in the February 6 issue of the journal Science. “We’ve been able to calculate that not only will the rise in sea levels at most coastal sites be significantly higher than previously expected, but that the sea-level change will be highly variable around the globe,” adds Gomez.

QUOTIENT
Many different ways of determining quotient types can be established

There are some things that always defines a loser :
(1) They normally do not know how to loose...
(2) They do not compete generally...
(3) There is generally a trend in their way of what to them is winning...
(4) It is to their belief, that they are right, and everybody else is wrong, or that the way they have been successful so far, is the right thing to do or way to proceed...
(5) A loser always wants to win no matter how...
(6) If the World only had these losers, it would be a worse place than what it is...
(7) Generally these "losers", find it hard to apply others people's ideas or criteria...
(8) These kind of people, do not like others being the same or better than them...
(9) It is a big mind effort for them to be or think different than the status-quo...

THE SEQUOIA faster than the top 500 computers of the World combined...!
20 petaflops. That's the speed rating of IBM's slated Sequoia supercomputer, the future world's fastest supercomputer that promises to be faster than every system on the Top500 supercomputer list, combined.
So what's all that actually mean? IBM offered us some more tangible ways to wrap your mind around 20 quadrillion mathematical processes per second.
• If each of the 6.7 billion people on earth had a hand calculator and worked together on a calculation 24 hours per day, 365 days a year, it would take 320 years to do what Sequoia will do in one hour.
• 20 petaflops could offer a 50x improvement in our capability to predict earthquakes, allowing scientists to predict an earthquake's effects on a building-by-building basis across an area as large as Los Angeles County.
• 20 petaflops could also provide a 40x improvement in our capability to monitor and forecast weather. This would allow forecasters to predict local weather events that affect areas 100 meters to one kilometer in size, down from their current ten-kilometer ability.
The Sequoia will be powered by 1.6 million cores (specific 45-nanometer chips in development) and 1.6 petabytes of memory. It will be housed in 96 refrigerators spanning roughly 3,000 square feet.
It's for the U.S. Government who will use the system for "uncertainty quantification (UQ) studies" and weapon science calculations. [IBM Supercomputing]

Supercomputer with processing power of two million laptops
Michael Harvey and Will Pavia
Among the breed of warehouse-sized calculators known as supercomputers it will be the new king: an almighty machine capable of performing twenty thousand trillion calculations every second.
IBM is developing the Sequoia supercomputer for the US Government, a machine with the processing power of two million laptops.
Today’s fastest supercomputers would seem sluggish in comparison, while past supercomputers would resemble so many rusting Commodore 64s in school jumble sales.
Sequoia, due to be installed in the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California in 2011, is to perform the calculations and simulations required to test America’s nuclear stockpile.
In its spare time it may be required to investigate the human genome, predict the possible outcomes of climate change, chart the path of tornados and discover new sources of energy.
Any assessment of the speed and power of the proposed machine requires the sort of eye-watering numbers usually reserved for space scientists and Zimbabwean bankers.
According to IBM, given an entire day, the Sequoia could match the output that 120 billion men with calculators might achieve in 50 years. The company estimates that it will be more powerful than today’s 500 most powerful supercomputers combined, and 15 times faster than the fastest of their kind.
While previous supercomputers required warehouses the size of football fields, Sequoia will fit handily inside a large house. Its 1.6 million microprocessors will slot inside 96 refrigerator-sized racks, taking up no more than 3,422 square feet.
As for electricity, it will require a mere 6 megawatts a year: equivalent to the power consumed by 500 American homes. If this does not sound particularly efficient, consider that for every watt of energy used, it will perform 3,000 calculations, against 200 calculations per watt managed by supercomputers today.
The main purpose of the Sequoia programme will be to allow nuclear scientists to determine whether weapons will work as required under the National Nuclear Security Administration stockpile stewardship programme.
“The problem we have with the nuclear stockpile is similar to one you might have at home with a car you’ve kept in the garage for 20 to 30 years,” Mark Seager, assistant department head for advanced technology at Lawrence Livermore, told PC World. “How do you carefully maintain the car so that when you go to start the car, you can be very confident it will start?”

Oil holds above $40 after more grim economic news
By ALEX KENNEDY, Associated Press Writer Alex Kennedy, Associated Press Writer – Tue Feb 3, 4:52 am ET
SINGAPORE – Oil prices held above $40 a barrel Tuesday in Asia after being dragged down overnight by more grim U.S. economic news that pointed to a deepening recession in the world's largest economy.

Light, sweet crude for March delivery rose 31 cents to $40.39 a barrel by late afternoon in Singapore in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.60 overnight to settle at $40.08.
Oil prices have fallen about 72 percent since peaking at $147.27 a barrel in mid July as a financial crisis in the U.S. sub-prime mortgage sector mushroomed into the worst worldwide economic slowdown in decades.
"I think the world is underestimating the power of this recession," said Christoffer Moltke-Leth, head of sales trading for Saxo Capital in Singapore. "It's still unfolding. It could be really, really ugly," he said.
Moltke-Leth expects oil to fall to as low as $28 a barrel by the end of the March.

IBM computer will have power of 2 million laptops
Seven months after IBM delivered the world's fastest supercomputer, it has announced an even speedier one with the computing power of 2 million laptops.
IBM said on Tuesday it is developing the technology for its new Sequoia computer, with delivery scheduled in 2011 to the Department of Energy for use at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Sequoia will chug along at 20 petaflops per second and is one order of magnitude quicker than its predecessor. The earlier machine, delivered in June to the Energy Department, broke the 1 petaflop barrier.
Peta is a term for quadrillion and FLOP stands for floating point operations per second.
Sequoia, and a smaller computer called Dawn, are being built in Rochester, Minnesota, for use in simulating nuclear tests. IBM says they can also be used for complex tasks like weather forecasting or oil exploration.
IBM says Sequoia will be highly energy-efficient for the job it does but even so will occupy 96 refigerator-sized racks in an area the size of a big house -- 3,422 square feet (318 square metres).

World Stocks Sink on Profit Worries
February 3, 2009, 6:35 am
World stocks hit a one-week low and the euro set a two-month trough against the dollar on Monday as nervousness grew about poor economic data and falling corporate profits in a rapidly slowing global economy.
A closely-watched euro zone survey showed the region’s manufacturing business shrank again albeit at a slower pace in January while factory prices tumbled at their fastest rate in at least six years, leaving scope for further interest cuts from the European Central bank.
Furthermore, investors are braced for a slew of fourth-quarter corporate earnings especially from the United States which are likely to show deteriorating corporate profits.

Walker's World: China's debts mount up
By MARTIN WALKER (UPI Editor Emeritus)
Published: February 02, 2009
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Partly because so much of China's bad economic news emerged while Premier Wen Jiabao was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the gloom about China's collapsing exports and rising unemployment and unrest has become intense.
Nonetheless, China's war chest of American Treasury bonds and securities and its hard currency holdings still total $2 trillion, which may be the largest single store of liquid wealth available on Earth.
However, the problem that has yet to penetrate the consciousness of the markets, let alone that of American policymakers, is that Chinese corporations have to roll over some $2.4 trillion of external debt this year. These are not easy times to find bankers who are willing to help.
On the one hand, the bankers need the money to build up their own capital base and fend off threats of bankruptcy. On the other hand, governments are putting heavy pressure on their own banks to lend, but to lend particularly to domestic borrowers rather than to customers abroad.

Melting of Earth's Ice Cover Reaches New High...!

Melting of Earth's Ice Cover Reaches New High
and "diminishing fresh water supply...!"
by Worldwatch Institute on March 6, 2000
by Lisa Mastny
The Earth's ice cover is melting in more places and at higher rates than at any time since record keeping began. Reports from around the world compiled by the Worldwatch Institute (see attached data table) show that global ice melting accelerated during the 1990s-which was also the warmest decade on record.
Scientists suspect that the enhanced melting is among the first observable signs of human-induced global warming, caused by the unprecedented release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases over the past century. Glaciers and other ice features are particularly sensitive to temperature shifts.
The Earth's ice cover acts as a protective mirror, reflecting a large share of the sun's heat back into space and keeping the planet cool. Loss of the ice would not only affect the global climate, but would also raise sea levels and spark regional flooding, damaging property and endangering lives. Large-scale melting would also threaten key water supplies as well as alter the habitats of many of the world's plant and animal species.
Some of the most dramatic reports come from the polar regions, which are warming faster than the planet as a whole and have lost large amounts of ice in recent decades. The Arctic sea ice, covering an area roughly the size of the United States, shrunk by an estimated 6 percent between 1978 and 1996, losing an average of 34,300 square kilometers-an area larger than the Netherlands-each year.
The Arctic sea ice has also thinned dramatically since the 1960s and 70s. Between this period and the mid-1990s, the average thickness dropped from 3.1 meters to 1.8 meters-a decline of nearly 40 percent in less than 30 years.
The Arctic's Greenland Ice Sheet-the largest mass of land-based ice outside of Antarctica, with 8 percent of the world's ice-has thinned more than a meter per year on average since 1993 along parts of its southern and eastern edges.
The massive Antarctic ice cover, which averages 2.3 kilometers in thickness and represents some 91 percent of Earth's ice, is also melting. So far, most of the loss has occurred along the edges of the Antarctic Peninsula, on the ice shelves that form when the land-based ice sheets flow into the ocean and begin to float. Within the past decade, three ice shelves have fully disintegrated: the Wordie, the Larsen A, and the Prince Gustav. Two more, the Larsen B and the Wilkins, are in full retreat and are expected to break up soon, having lost more than one-seventh of their combined 21,000 square kilometers since late 1998-a loss the size of Rhode Island. Icebergs as big as Delaware have also broken off Antarctica in recent years, posing threats to open-water shipping.

ARE YOU GOING TO BUY A CANADIAN FUEL CELL HYDROGEN VEHICLE...?!
I have never been a fan of hydrogen technology as a solution to the climate change problem. It would be great if we could power automobiles with hydrogen (generated, of course, with renewable energy), but how do you carry the hydrogen around in your car? Do you really want to be driving around on top of a tank full of compressed hydrogen? Can you say Hindenburg?
I just listened to a great segment on this week's Science Friday. The guest, Jerry Woodall, a professor at Purdue, has an interesting idea for how to carry hydrogen in a way that seems extremely safe to me.

...HYGROGEN VEHICLES ARE SUPPOSED TO ONLY
"EMIT" WATER...! WHY NOT SAY, THAT THEY "CONSUME
WATER" "FINALLY", AS THE RUNOFF IS LESS THAN THE
INTAKE...ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY MAKE HYDROGEN
FROM SPLITTING THE H2O MOLECULE OF WATER,
USING SOLAR POWER...!
..when are they finally going to make vehicles, that are
"renewable", better than what animals were...!

...the bath tub model of climate...!

CARTOON OF THE CLIMATE GLOBAL CO2
BATHTUB EFFECT.
Basically, the atmosphere is like a bathtub with a partially opened drain. Carbon dioxide from burning fuels and forests is flowing in twice as fast as it is being absorbed by plants and the ocean, and some of those “sinks” are in fact getting saturated, it appears, meaning that the “drain” is clogging a bit. (More on “CO2’s Long Goodbye“.) [UPDATE, 1/29: Inspired by this piece, Marc Roberts, perhaps the world's best -- and only -- climate cartoonist, reposted a hilarious take on the bathbub effect.]
In a tub, this is a recipe for a flood. In the climate system, Dr. Sterman says — echoing many climate scientists — it is a loud message that a prompt start is needed in curbing and then cutting emissions if you want to cut the chances of passing dangerous thresholds. He recently wrote a Policy Forum paper in Science reviewing his and other research on widespread misunderstanding of this kind of risk, including a 2007 study he was a co-author of in which 84 percent of 212 M.I.T. participating grad students drew curves for proposed emission trends that would result in concentrations continuing to climb.
“The erroneous belief that stabilizing emissions would quickly stabilize the climate supports wait-and-see policies but violates basic laws of physics,” Dr. Sterman concluded.
The long lifetime of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the long lifetime of sources like coal-burning power plants once built, mean that the “faucet” for CO2 is getting cranked open just when it should be going in the opposite direction. Across Cambridge at Harvard, Kimberly Thompson holds the same view.

Climate change and the bath tub effect
It's been a busy week in the sphere of climate change science, with the most significant news generated by a paper published in PNAS that suggests many of the impacts of climate change are already "irreversible".

It sounds like an excuse to throw in the towel on attempts to control carbon emissions, but the reality is much more complicated. The best explanation of the research I've seen is from Dr John Stern of the MIT Sloan School of Management who uses the bathtub principle to illustrate the irreversibility of climate change.
Professor Martin Manning of Victoria University's Climate Change Research Institute comments on the PNAS research on the SMC website.
Meanwhile, GNS Science paleontologist Chris Hollis has had a paper published in Geology which suggests the waters around New Zealand were a balmy 30 degrees for a period around 50 million years ago during the Eocene period. The cause is greenhouse gas-induced global warming, but how exactly is still unknown. But the evidence of such tropical sea temperatures are at odds with computer models for the period which indicated temperatures during the period didn't exceed 20 degrees centigrade.
Listen to an SMC interview with Dr Hollis here and registered journalists can log-in to download the research.
A joint briefing of the Aussie and NZ Science Media Centres held today featured scientists from both sides of the Tasman looking at the issue of ocean acidification. The audio recording and presentations will be posted on the AusSMC website tomorrow.

Press Release: United Nations
Ban Calls On World To Fight Holocaust Denial, Anti-Semitism And Bigotry
Over six decades after 6 million Jews, nearly a third of the total, and countless other minorities were butchered in the Nazi German Holocaust, it is more vital than ever to learn from the tragedy to prevent further atrocities, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned today.
“We must continue to examine why the world failed to prevent the Holocaust and other atrocities since. That way, we will be better armed to defeat anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance,” he said in a message marking the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

30 January 2009
Today Paris-based Reporters Without Borders launched an appeal for the release of two prominent Burmese political prisoners.
Last November blogger Nay Phone Latt and famous comedian Zarganar were sentenced to 20 years and 59 years respectively for criticising the Burmese junta via the internet.
Today, on the first anniversary of the arrest of Nay Phone Latt, the media rights group urged the international community not to forget about the plight of these two courageous bloggers.

Forced Evictions Leave Thousands Homeless In Cambodia, Says Un Expert
New York, Jan 30 2009 1:10PM
The forced evictions of tens of thousands of Cambodia’s poor constitute a “grave breach” of human rights, a United Nations independent expert said today, calling for damages to be paid for lost homes and the provision of alternative housing.
In the middle of the night last week, over 130 families were forced to leave their homes without prior notice in the capital, Phnom Penh, so that a private company could redevelop the site. The shelters in the poor community were destroyed, and there have been reports that before the eviction, the community suffered intimidation and that the areas representatives were subject to criminal charges.

Press Release: United Nations
Hordes Of Caterpillars Threaten Liberia, Possible Risk To Wider Region – UN
New York, Jan 22 2009 2:10PM
In what is being described by the United Nations as Liberia’s worst plague in 30 years, hordes of caterpillars are destroying crops and vegetation in northern areas of the country and posing a major threat to the already precarious food security situation in the country and the wider region.
The situation in Liberia is a national emergency and is likely to escalate into a regional crisis involving neighbouring Guinea, Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire, according to the Representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (<"http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/9832/icode/">FAO) in Liberia, Winfred Hammond.
