Unitarians mark birth of evolutionist Darwin
Unitarian Universalist fellowships in East Falmouth and Chatham are commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin with several upcoming programs.
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth is celebrating the evolutionist's birth with a reading of key scenes from the 1955 play "Inherit the Wind," by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, 7 p.m. Wednesday. The reading will be followed by a short discussion of the continuing controversy over the teaching of evolution in public schools.

Learning to Love Evolution
January 30, 2009
Marking Darwin's 200th birthday on February 12th, Philip Kitcher has written a review of evolutionary geneticist Jerry Coyne's latest book, Why Evolution Is True, in which Coyne tries to persuade his readers that the theory of evolution is true. "As public-opinion surveys reveal, most of our countrymen have grave doubts about the truth of Darwin's theory," Kitcher writes in the Wall Street Journal, and he’s doubtful that even a book as well argued as Coyne's can change the fact that for many Americans, believing in evolution is the equivalent of rejecting religious morality. Still, Kitcher says, "whether or not he succeeds in bringing Americans en masse to learn to love evolution, he has offered Darwin a splendid birthday present."
http://www.genomeweb.com/blog/learning-love-evolution

Darwin in Danger? Top Evolution Stories of the Year
Newswise — Evolution is under attack across the U.S. Last year, the teaching of evolution was challenged in scores of schools. During the same period, six states introduced (and Louisiana passed) "academic freedom laws" that discredit evolution and smuggle creationist teachings into the classroom. (For more, see http://ncseweb.org/evolution/education/academic-freedom).
2009 doesn't look much better. Oklahoma is first to bat with a strong antievolution bill, followed by Mississippi with a bill requiring warning labels on textbooks. Other states that may consider similar legislation in 2009 include Michigan, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, and South Carolina.
Creationists are also undermining the teaching of evolution by sabotaging state science standards, with a battle currently raging among the members of the Texas state board of education. And in too many classrooms around the country, due to local pressure, their own misconceptions, or a lack of training, teachers are not teaching evolution.

New Zealand Dollar Drops to 6-Year Low, Australia’s Also Falls
By Candice Zachariahs

Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- New Zealand’s dollar dropped to a six-year low after the central bank cut interest rates by a larger-than-forecast 1.5 percentage point, reducing the appeal of the nation’s assets. The Australian currency also fell.
The currencies fell as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand slashed rates to a record low 3.5 percent in a decision that was forecast by three of 13 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Traders are betting Australia’s central bank will cut it cash target 1 percentage point to 3.25 percent when it meets Feb. 3.
“It has been a surprise for the market and we’ve seen the currency fall quite dramatically on the back of that,” said Danica Hampton, a currency strategist at Bank of New Zealand Ltd. in Wellington. “The currency will remain under pressure.”
New Zealand’s dollar slid as low as 51.53 U.S. cents, the weakest since December 2002, before trading at 51.84 cents as of 4:11 p.m. in Sydney. It bought 46.57 yen from 47.06 yesterday in late Asian trading.
Australia’s currency fell 0.9 percent to 66.01 U.S. cents from 66.62 cents late in Asia yesterday. The currency fell 0.3 percent to 59.32 yen. It strengthened to NZ$1.2786, the highest since August 2008, before trading at NZ$1.2736, up 0.8 percent from yesterday.

Legislation to Reverse Stem Cell Ban Vowed by U.S. Lawmaker
By Rob Waters
Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Representative Diana DeGette said she plans to re-introduce a bill overturning limits on federal funding for stem-cell research even if President Barack Obama lifts the ban by executive order.
Former President George W. Bush, citing ethical concerns, barred federal support for researchers studying embryonic stem cells created after August 2001. He twice vetoed legislation, co- written by DeGette and approved by Congress, overturning the ban.
As an Illinois senator, Obama voted in favor of DeGette’s bill. He said during the presidential campaign that he favored reversing Bush’s ban on federal money for stem cell research. In a telephone interview today, DeGette, a Colorado Democrat, said she hopes Obama will issue such an order in the next few weeks.

Drought, Flood in Global Warming to Last Millennium, Study Says
By Jim Efstathiou Jr.
Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere today from power plants and cars will affect surface temperatures and sea levels for more than 1,000 years, scientists from the U.S. and Europe reported.
Coastal regions and small islands could be submerged for centuries, even if carbon dioxide emissions are completely stopped in the next 100 years, according to a new study from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The agency’s report appears today in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“We are creating something which is irreversible on the human time scale,” said Pierre Friedlingstein, a co-author of the report, in an interview. “The more we wait the more we go into a stage that will last a very long time.”
A 16 percent increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from today’s levels would trigger drought conditions in southern Europe, northern Africa and the southwestern U.S. that could last a millennium, said Friedlingstein, research director at the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace in Gif-Sur-Yvette, France. Other regions could see lower water supplies, more wild fires and lower food production.
The buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the next century will cause sea levels to rise for the next 1,000 years, according to the report. A 56 percent increase in heat-trapping gases would lead to an average sea-level rise of 1.3 to 3.2 feet (0.4 to 1 meter) by the year 3000.
Minimum Sea Level Rise
“Additional contributions to sea level rise from the melting of glaciers and polar ice sheets are too uncertain to quantify,” Susan Solomon, senior NOAA scientist and lead author of the report, said in a statement. “We presented the minimum sea level rise that we can expect from well-understood physics, and we were surprised that it was so large.”

China Tells Obama What to Do With His Yuan Views: William Pesek
an. 28 (Bloomberg) -- China took Barack Obama’s views on the yuan seriously. So seriously that it is doing the exact opposite of what the U.S. president would like.
China let the yuan fall the most in a month on Jan. 23, right after Timothy Geithner, Obama’s pick for Treasury secretary, relayed Obama’s campaign position that China was “manipulating” its currency. The reaction was China’s way of telling the new U.S. leader what he can do with his foreign-exchange views.
What should currency traders do now? Is a trade war brewing between the world’s No. 1 and No. 3 economies? Is the yuan about to strengthen? Will Obama risk the ire of the most populous nation to make good on his protectionist campaign-trail rhetoric? Perhaps the answer is for everyone to relax.
Yes, China manipulates its currency. Arguably, so do Singapore, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and any nation that either pegs its currency, maintains a tight trading band or oversees a “managed float” system. Even Hong Kong, routinely ranked as the world’s freest economy by the Heritage Foundation, manipulates its currency. It has to maintain its link to the U.S. dollar.
“Manipulate” is a charged word, and it’s politically incorrect in financial circles. And yet it was hard to keep a straight face when a Commerce Ministry official argued on Jan. 24 that “China has never tried to gain advantage in international trade by manipulating its currency.”

Citi, BofA Show Investors Can’t Bank on Capital: David Reilly
Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Sheila Bair shouldn’t try to jawbone these markets.
The head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. declared during a television interview last week that “98 percent of all banks are well capitalized.”
Technically, she is right, since regulatory capital is different from shareholder equity. Still, that’s a nuance lost on most of the public and one that doesn’t adequately reflect just how bad things are at banks.
Even as Bair was speaking, debate was brewing in government circles over the possibility of having to nationalize banks. It doesn’t get much bleaker than that.
Bair needed to reflect in her comments more of a sense that all isn’t well, even if in language that didn’t panic investors or cause a bank run.
That may sound like semantics. It isn’t.
In July 2008, then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and other government officials reassured the public that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had adequate regulatory capital.
Plenty of mom-and-pop investors took those declarations to heart and held onto their stock in the mortgage giants. About six weeks later, those same investors got whacked when Paulson placed Fannie and Freddie under government control.

IMF report bleak news for Australia
January 29, 2009 10:30am
THE IMF's latest grim economic report, which predicts a slump in China and India's growth, is bleak news for Australia's export outlook, experts said.
"The outlook is for a catastrophe,'' National Australia Bank Capital chief economist Rob Henderson said.
While there was no direct mention of Australia in the six-page update, Mr Henderson said the bad news for the country was a big cut in the IMF's growth forecast for China to 6.7 per cent, down 1.8 percentage points from its previous forecast.
"Bleak news for Australia's export outlook for 2009,'' Mr Henderson said.
The world economy will essentially come to a halt this year as more than $2 trillion of bad assets clog the financial system, the International Monetary Fund said.

Australia Post bank glitch hits customers
29th January 2009, 9:45 WST

Thousands of WA Australia Post customers have been left temporarily out of pocket after a banking glitch at its outlets Australia-wide resulted in people being debited multiple times when they made a payment.
Customers who used EFTPOS at one of 4400 outlets on Tuesday were told by staff their bankcard was being declined only to later discover that the amount was being debited from their bank accounts with every transaction attempt.
For people using Australia Post to make big payments such as bills the bungle has left them hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, out of pocket.
Australia Post spokeswoman Sheridan Beattie said yesterday that the glitch was caused by the Commonwealth Bank’s EFTPOS banking system, which the company used.

New Zealand cuts rates to record low
Reuters
Published: January 29, 2009
WELLINGTON: New Zealand's central bank slashed interest rates by 150 basis points to a record low of 3.5 percent on Thursday to boost an economy deep in recession, and left the door open for further, smaller cuts.
The New Zealand dollar tumbled a full cent after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut rates for the fifth straight time, saying very negative news from trading partners and worsening global outlook played a large part in its decision.
"Certainly the policy in New Zealand is going to need to keep being eased, given the global outlook is deteriorating on a daily basis," said Citigroup's head of market economics, Stephen Halmarick.

Heat and Serena's game rise in Australian Open quarterfinals
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Serena Williams was having what she called an "out-of-body experience" Wednesday in brutal heat at the Australian Open.
Closing the Rod Laver Arena roof and cranking up the air conditioning helped the defending champion pull herself together and advance to the semifinals — but left her opponent steaming.
"I felt I was watching someone play in a blue dress, and it wasn't me, because it was so hot out there," said the second-ranked American, who beat Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. "And I kept trying to tell myself that it's not hot. But it got hotter."
Williams, seeking her fourth Australian title and 10th Grand Slam championship overall, next faces Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva, who had to play her entire match with the roof open. The fourth-seeded Dementieva ousted Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-2 to run her winning streak to 15 matches after she won two tuneup tournaments.

Global economy heading for 'catastrophe' - economist
Thu, 29 Jan 2009
News: Business

The global economy is heading for "catastrophe'' according to one economist in response to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) further slashing its world economic growth forecasts.
The IMF said overnight on Wednesday it now expects global growth to be just 0.5 percent in 2009 - the lowest rate since World War II - and a hefty 1.75 percentage point cut from it previous revision in November.
"The outlook is for a catastrophe,'' National Australia Bank Capital chief economist Rob Henderson said.
The IMF said despite wide-ranging policy actions, financial strains remained acute "pulling down the real economy''.
"A sustained economic recovery will not be possible until the financial sector's functionality is restored and credit markets are unclogged,'' it said in its World Economic Outlook Update.

Asia's economic crunch catches up with Australia

by Lawrence Bartlett Lawrence Bartlett – Wed Jan 28, 2:55 am ET
YDNEY (AFP) – A slew of economic data Wednesday pointed to an abrupt end to boom times in Australia as Asia's fading appetite for mining resources and the global financial crisis put the brakes on the economy.

Inflation fell for the first time in two years in the fourth quarter of 2008, skilled job vacancies dropped by 43 percent over the year and a major index of economic activity tipped a recession, figures showed.
A drop of 0.3 percent in the consumer price index slashed the annual inflation rate to 3.7 percent from 5.0 percent in the 12 months to September, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan said the drop was further evidence of the impact of the global recession and falling commodities prices on Australia's economy.
Demand in China and other Asian countries for Australian resources such as coal and iron ore had driven the economy for years, but exports have been hit hard by fading growth in major trading partners.
"Inflation is expected to continue to ease over the next six to 12 months, as the full effect of weaker world economic conditions flows through," Swan told a news conference.
"We domestically are seeing the unwinding of the mining boom. And as that occurs, the UK, the US, Japan and the eurozone countries are all in recession."

New UQ Finding About The Bane Of Parents' Lives - Head Lice, Australia

Main Category: Biology / Biochemistry
Also Included In: Genetics
Article Date: 27 Jan 2009 - 2:00 PST

Head lice are a challenge for parents of primary-school aged children all around the world, including Australia.
But a new genetic research finding about head lice has scientists scratching their heads in amazement at the miracle of nature.
"It will be of little comfort to parents but head lice have the most highly evolved mitochondrial chromosomes of all multi-celled animals," said Associate Professor Stephen Barker of the Parasitology Section, School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, at The University of Queensland.
Almost all multi-celled animals, including humans, have one large mitochondrial chromosome, but head lice have 12 or more mini-chromosomes.
What's more, parts of these 12 mini-chromosomes join to one another for a while only to split again later.
"This is extraordinary," Associate Professor Barker said.
These mini-chromosomes "seem to sit at the summit of mitochondrial chromosome evolution," his colleague, Dr Renfu Shao said.
"So the mitochondrial chromosomes of head lice, in this sense, are extreme genomes," he said.

Alberta orders regular testing of all police tasers

Alberta orders regular testing of all police tasers
JIM MACDONALD
The Canadian Press

January 27, 2009 at 2:54 PM EST
EDMONTON — Alberta is ordering regular testing of all 800 tasers used by municipal police forces across the province in the wake of media-sponsored testing that found irregularities with some of the stun guns.
Solicitor General Fred Lindsay announced Tuesday that testing will begin with model X-26 tasers to ensure they're not sending larger shocks than specified.
“We have 400 of these particular models in service in Alberta,” Mr. Lindsay told reporters. “We're testing the older models to ensure that they're within the manufacturer's specifications.”
A government release says that if any of the devices are found to be not working properly, they will be pulled from service.
Many police agencies are testing tasers after a CBC investigation in early December found some older models delivered more volts than the manufacturer said was possible.

Canada finds itself in a 'credit deadlock'
Jacqueline Thorpe, Financial Post Published: Tuesday, January 20, 2009
The fact is people are becoming less willing to borrow and spend, even if the Bank of Canada's benchmark interest rate is now a tantalizing 1%, the lowest policy rate since the Bank of Canada was ...

What if the Bank of Canada cut interest rates and nobody borrowed? As the Bank of Canada joins other central banks around the world in slashing interest rates to historic lows, this is the essential conundrum they face.
They may have brought some semblance of normality to credit markets, and harangued banks back into lending, but now borrowers are on strike.
Call it a "credit deadlock," as David Laidler, fellow-in-residence at the C.D. Howe Institute, does, or a shift from "aspirational to desperational" spending, as Goldman Sachs quipped Tuesday, but the fact is people are becoming less willing to borrow and spend, even if the Bank of Canada's benchmark interest rate is now a tantalizing 1%, the lowest policy rate since the Bank of Canada was founded in 1934.

We have become a nation of beggars
Terence Corcoran, Financial Post Published: Friday, January 16, 2009
Are you "shovel-ready," poised to hit the ground running, or merely desperate for cheap cash to get through the recession? If so, here's your last chance to apply to Ottawa for a piece of the massive government spending-bailout-infrastructure-stimulus operation now being prepared for Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's Jan. 27 budget extravaganza.
To get you going, the National Post has created an all-purpose Stimulus Canada application document. Simply make sure your company/institution fills out the form here to get in on the action.
We're just kidding, of course, or at least we were until our satirical Stimulus Canada General Application Form was mugged by reality, which is rapidly turning out to be funnier than the fanciful idea of a government department called Stimulus Canada. To all intents and purposes, Stimulus Canada already exists.
Government money to flow, the taps are opening, deficits are no problem. The spending, as Stephen Harper said after a meeting with the premiers on Friday, will be "very significant" and there will be "very significant deficits." That could mean new spending of $20-billion and deficits of $40-billion.

What if deflation threatens Canada?
Jacqueline Thorpe, Financial Post Published: Tuesday, December 09, 2008

With Canadian interest rates at a 50-year low of 1.5%, the big question for Bay Street is what firepower the Bank of Canada has left to fight a recession that has only just begun.
Certainly interest rates could be cut a bit further, although the bank seemed reluctant to hold the door wide open Tuesday, saying only it would carefully monitor developments as it judged "to what extent further monetary stimulus will be required."
Big fiscal stimulus is also likely on the way from the Conservative government in its budget in January. If all goes according to plan, the three percentage points of easing the bank has unleashed since last year, along with the fiscal stimulus and a weaker dollar should help the economy get through the hurdles ahead.
But what Bay Street really wants to know is whether the Bank of Canada believes deflation is a real threat in Canada and, if so, what measures the bank may be prepared to take in order to tackle it, especially as interest rates start creeping toward zero.

China's exports fall for first time in seven years
Duncan Mavin, in Hong Kong, Financial Post Published: Wednesday, December 10, 2008

HONG KONG -- Chinese authorities have for the first time revealed that exports - a key driver of the Chinese economic miracle - are officially in decline.
The grim truth was revealed by Beijing Wednesday, confirming what millions of the country's hard-up factory workers already knew.
While November's dip in exports might appear slight at 2.2%, the downturn comes after years of stellar growth and took many observers off guard.
The sudden drop, the first monthly fall in exports in seven years, was not forecast by any of 18 economists surveyed recently by Bloomberg News. Indeed, as recently as October, China recorded a 19.2% rise in the value of goods it sends overseas.
"The figures are horrifying," said Lu Zhengwei, chief economist at Industrial Bank Co. in Shanghai.
Although economists had not predicted such dire data, the evidence that China's manufacturers are hurting has been manifest for months.

CEO confidence plunges around the globe
Tue Jan 27, 2009 11:13pm GMT
By Ben Hirschler
DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Confidence among leaders of the world's top companies meeting in Davos has nosedived to a new low, with recession and a worsening credit crisis torpedoing faith in corporate prospects.
The findings from a poll of more than 1,100 CEOs sets a grim backdrop to a four-day meeting of the world's business and political elite which opens on Wednesday in the Swiss ski resort.
Bankers are thin on the ground this year but policymakers will work behind the scenes ahead of a summit of the G20 group of big and emerging countries in April and a G8 summit in July. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will both address the meeting later on Wednesday.

Britain demands global response as world's hungry to hit 1 bln
www.chinaview.cn 2009-01-28 06:18:24

MADRID, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- World leaders, major businesses and the United Nations were urged to sign-up to a new international agreement on Tuesday that will lift millions of people out of hunger and better prepare the world for future food crises.
Speaking at a world summit in Madrid, Spain, which ended on Tuesday, British International Development Minister Ivan Lewis setout a proposed pact that will for the first time establish a global response to food shortages that will double both food production in Africa and the growth of the agriculture sector in Asia.
This Britain-led action is expected to significantly boost agricultural production, reduce the vulnerability of the poor to food price rises and hold countries to account on their commitments to the poorest nations.
It is estimated that 950 million people still face a daily battle against hunger and the United Nations now forecasts that this figure could rise above 1 billion this year. That would mean one in six of the world's population will be unable to obtain the food they need to live adequately.

Hungary pushes for new gas pipeline

European leaders and gas suppliers have met in Hungary to discuss a proposed pipeline that would carry energy supplies to western Europe, bypassing Ukraine and Russia.
The summit comes after a recent dispute between Russia and Ukraine over gas prices, that saw large areas of Europe left without gas for two weeks.
The Nabucco project is a 3,300km pipeline between Turkey and Austria, which could transport up to 31bn cubic metres of gas each year to western Europe, and reduce the region's dependence on Russian gas.
At the meeting in Budapest, Ferenc Gyurcsany, Hungary's prime minister, stressed the importance of energy security in light of the recent crisis.

Global economy grinds to a stop, according to the International Monetary Fund
David Uren, Economics correspondent | January 28, 2009

THE world economy is at a standstill, with the major developed countries in deep recession, according to leaked forecasts prepared by the International Monetary Fund.
The third downward revision to the IMF's forecasts in the last four months comes as layoffs affecting more than 70,000 workers were announced around the world on Monday.
The IMF is due to release new official economic forecasts before the end of the week. However, a well-sourced report carried by Reuters news agency says it expects global growth of just 0.5per cent this year.
The fund has been struggling to keep up with the rapidly deteriorating world economy, having cut its estimate for world growth next year from 3.8 per cent last April to 3 per cent in October and 2.2 per cent in November.
The latest update anticipates sharply slowing growth in China and India.

Canberra rules out U-turn on whaling
Mark Dodd | January 28, 2009
AUSTRALIA has emphatically ruled out backing a return to any form of commercial whaling by Japan, after reports it was involved in a deal to allow Japanese whaling in the North Pacific in return for an end to the annual Southern Ocean hunt.
Two senior government ministers yesterday rejected reports carried in Fairfax newspapers that Canberra was moving to support a new commercial whaling agreement.
Senior officials from the Department of Environment were present at an International Whaling Commission meeting in Britain last month to discuss a reform agenda that included a separate proposal by Japan for coastal whaling.
But Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and Environment Minister Peter Garrett deny the Government has been involved in a secret whaling deal.

Scientists discover immortal jellyfish
Lech Mintowt-Czyz | January 27, 2009
TURRITOPSIS nutricula may be the world's only "immortal" creature.
Jellyfish usually die after propagating but Turritopsis reverts to a sexually immature stage after reaching adulthood and is capable of rejuvenating itself.
The 4-5mm diameter creature, technically known as a hydrozoan, is the only known animal that is capable of reverting to its juvenile polyp state.
Theoretically, this cycle can repeat indefinitely, rendering it potentially immortal.
Found in warm tropical waters Turritopsis is believed to be spreading across the world as ships’ ballast water is discharged in ports.

Imported biofuel a risk to wildlife
Greg Roberts | January 27, 2009
AUSTRALIA is contributing directly to the widespread destruction of tropical rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia by importing millions of tonnes of taxpayer-subsidised biodiesel made from palm oil.
Imports of the fuel are rising, undermining the Rudd Government's $200 million commitment to reduce deforestation in the region - a problem that globally contributes to 20 per cent of the world's carbon emissions.
The bulldozing of rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations is also putting further pressure on orangutans and other endangered wildlife throughout Southeast Asia. And the Australian biofuels industry says it is struggling to compete with the cheap imports from Asia, which are touted as an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel.

Global warming will create ocean dead zones

January 26, 2009
Article from: Agence France-Presse
GLOBAL warming may create "dead zones" in the ocean that would be devoid of fish and seafood and endure for up to two millennia, according to a study published yesterday.
Its authors say deep cuts in the world's carbon emissions are needed to brake a trend capable of wrecking the marine ecosystem and depriving future generations of the harvest of the seas.
In a study published online by the journal Nature Geoscience, scientists in Denmark built a computer model to simulate climate change over the next 100,000 years.

Bid to exhume Galileo's body for DNA
January 23, 2009
Article from: Reuters
ITALIAN and British scientists want to exhume the body of 16th century astronomer Galileo for DNA tests to determine if his severe vision problems may have affected some of his findings.
The scientists told Reuters that DNA tests would help answer some unresolved questions about the health of the man known as the father of astronomy, whom the Vatican condemned for teaching that the earth revolves around the sun.
"If we knew exactly what was wrong with his eyes we could use computer models to recreate what he saw in his telescope," said Paolo Galluzzi, director of the Museum of History and Science in Florence, the city where Galileo is buried.
Galileo, who lived from 1564 to 1642, is known to have had intermittent eye problems for the second half of his life and was totally blind for his last two years.

Marvin Schur died "a slow, painful death," said Kanu Virani, Oakland County's deputy chief medical examiner, who performed the autopsy.
Neighbours discovered Schur's body on Jan. 17. They said the indoor temperature was below zero Celsius at the time, the Bay City Times reported Monday.

Harper promises six-point economic action plan

OTTAWA - The Harper government is promising a six-point economic stimulus plan to rescue the economy.
Just weeks after predicting that Canada would escape recession and post a budget surplus, the chastened Conservatives now say swift, deep action is needed to stave off disaster.
In today's throne speech, the government lays out the broad strokes of an economic action plan, with the details to come in Tuesday's budget.
The plan calls for stimulating the economy through public and private investment, including immediate cash for infrastructure.
It says the government will protect the stability of the financial system and ensure access to credit.
And it promises help for the poor, the unemployed, aboriginals, and struggling industries such as the auto sector and forestry.

UNESCO Deplores Murders Of Journalists In Russia...!

UNESCO Deplores Murders Of Journalists In Russia
Tuesday, 27 January 2009, 11:16 am
Press Release: United Nations
UNESCO Chief Deplores Murders Of Journalists In Russia, Venezuela
New York, Jan 26 2009 3:10PM
The head of the United Nations agency tasked with upholding press freedom condemned the killings of journalists and a lawyer in Russia and Venezuela, underscoring that these murders are a contravention of human rights.
Journalist Anastasia Baburova and human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov were shot dead on 19 January while having a conversation outside a Moscow metro station. Mr. Markelov, who had just given a press conference, is believed to have been the target of the attack. Ms. Baburova worked for Novaya Gazeta, the same newspaper as investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya, who was assassinated in 2006.
Also slain in Russia recently was Shafiq Amrakhov, owner and editor of the online regional news agency RIA 51 in Murmansk in the country’s north-west. He was shot inside his apartment and died six days later.

“These killings represent a tragic blow to the basic human right of freedom of expression and to all other human rights, which are essential if good governance and the rule of law are to be upheld,” said UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura.
On 16 January, Orel Sambrano, editor of ABC, a weekly magazine, was shot and killed in broad daylight as he got out of his car in Valencia, a city in north-central Venezuela.
The 62-year-old, who was also the vice-president of the privately-owned Radio America 890AM station and a columnist for the regional daily Notitarde, had received death threats linked to his reports on drug trafficking.
The “deliberate targeting” of media professionals such as Mr. Sambrano is a setback to “democracy and rule of law which depend on the ability of the members of any society to hold free debates about issues of general concern and make informed decisions,” said Mr. Matsuura.

Bank of Canada cuts rate to 1 percent
OTTAWA, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- The Bank of Canada announced Tuesday it had lowered its interest rate by one-half of a percentage point to 1 percent.
In a statement from Ottawa, the bank said "the outlook for the global economy has deteriorated" since its last cut to 1.5 percent on Dec. 9.
The bank said international advanced economies are in recession, but taking action.
"There are signs that these extraordinary measures are starting to gain traction, although it will take some time for financial conditions to normalize," the statement said. "Canada's economy is projected to contract through mid-2009, with real gross domestic product dropping by 1.2 percent this year on an annual average basis."
The bank predicted modest decreases in housing prices this year should cause core consumer price index inflation to ease, "bottoming at 1.1 percent in the fourth quarter."
In response, Toronto-Dominion Bank (NYSE:TD) and Bank of Montreal each announced they were cutting their prime lending rates by half a percentage point to 3 percent, the Globe and Mail reported.

2. Blissful ignorance
Barack Obama’s first few days in office have been the most publicized—and scrutinized—of any president’s in recent memory. But his intentions on a number of key policy files remain murky. For example, it’s not yet clear whether Obama believes he can end the war in Afghanistan—and, if he does believe victory is possible, when and how that can be expected to happen. Even on Iraq, from where he’s promised to withdraw U.S. troops within 16 months, Obama has added so many caveats to the pledge that it’s difficult to tell how the president will respond if things take a turn for the worse. Some domestic questions remain similarly unanswered: If long-term deficits are as “unsustainable” as he says they are, how does he plan to balance the federal budget? How will he reconcile his promise to make government more transparent with the country’s national security obsession? And after placating unions during the campaign with talk of re-opening NAFTA, what will his relationship with Big Labour be like now that he’s in the White House?

Post-racial America?
What will change for Americans now that their President has more melanin in his skin?

Can we really spend our way out of this mess?
The remarkable re-embrace of deficit spending is every bit as mindless as the financial panic that preceded it

1. What if Obama wants us in Afghanistan past 2011?
During the election, Stephen Harper promised Canadian troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2011. Asked whether the new American administration might change that position, Lawrence Cannon and Peter MacKay have refused to budge—2011 is the end date. But in this interview with Sun media, the Prime Minister wiggles just slightly, saying “I’m not going to speculate on what President Obama may or may not ask me.”

...sometimes it is advisable to be "previsive"...!???
...sometimes you have to wait and see what happens, and if it happens...?!
...how do you "define" : "...what if is does happen...?!
...no, that is very improbable that it will happen...!
...so we won't be previsible, and waste our "minds" and time, much less
money...! in any studies, or considerations of this or that kind...!
...we are and have always been Canada, and that is how we are...!

...what happened...?...you study it up...
...i really only know in details some initial data,
and the results...!
...this is the failed, "black" opposer to be able to
defeat Chavez...!
....WHICH IS THE REAL "TRUE" STORY...?
...only probably the "players" and a few others
really know...!
...additionally many players have changed,
since 1999, and things do not "seem" the same...!

X-Linked and Y-Linked Inheritance

X-Linked and Y-Linked Inheritance

X-linked genes are found on the sex X chromosome. X-linked genes just like autosomal genes have both dominant and recessive types. Recessive X-linked disorders are rarely seen in females and usually only affect males. This is because males inherit their X chromosome and all X-linked genes will be inherited from the maternal side. Fathers only pass on their Y chromosome to their sons, so no X-linked traits will be inherited from father to son. Females express X-linked disorders when they are homozygous for the disorder and become carriers when they are heterozygous. An infamous recessive X-linked disorder is Hemophilia A. Hemophilia is a disorder where blood does not clot properly due to a shortage of clotting factor VIII. This disorder gained recognition as it traveled through royal families, notably the descendent's of Britain's Queen Victoria. X-linked dominant inheritance will show the same phenotype as a heterozygote and homozygote. Just like X-linked inheritance, there will be a lack of male-to-male inheritance, which makes it distinguishable from autosomal traits. One example of a X-linked trait is Coffin-Lowry syndrome, which is caused by a mutation in ribosomal protein gene. This mutation results in skeletal, craniofacial abnormalities, mental retardation, and short stature.
X chromosomes in females undergo a process known as X inactivation. X inactivation is when one of the two X chromosomes in females is almost completely inactivated. It is important that this process occurs otherwise a woman would produce twice the amount of normal X chromosome proteins. The mechanism for X inactivation will occur during the embryonic stage. For people with disorders like trisomy X, where the genotype has three X chromosomes, X-inactivation will inactivate all X chromosomes until there is only one X chromosome active. X inactivation is not only limited to females, males with Klinefelter syndrome, who have an extra X chromosome, will also undergo X inactivation to have only one completely active X chromosome.
Y-linked inheritance occurs when a gene, trait, or disorder is transferred through the Y chromosome. Since Y chromosomes can only be found in males, Y linked traits are only passed on from father to son. The testis determining factor, which is located on the Y chromosome, determines the maleness of individuals. Besides the maleness inherited in the Y-chromosome there are no other found Y-linked characteristics.

...this means to anyones logic, that "somebody" wants, only female
traits to be passed on, and not the "fathers"...!

...i've seen boys that are more of the likes of the Dad than the Mum...!

...is this like the Bible, to protect the female, and guarantee, the females
proliferation...!? ...being men more stronger than females...! ...so that
there are enough females for the guaranteed continuance of humanity...!

...what is the truth...?!
...it could be as i have indicated, the truth has not been told...!
...or it is a well kept "secret"...!
...WHAT DOES IT MEAN, THE "COINCIDENTAL", OR "NICELY
COINCIDENTAL", OR "TOO COINCIDENTAL" issue of the
similarity between the Earth axis inclination of around 23 degrees,
and the 23 chromosomes of sperm or "eggs"/ovules...? ? ?
